Process Four
How a simple mark is earned.

Three spreads from the same book. No final logo is shown — only how it was earned: by prototyping A’s, by drawing hundreds of circles, by starting with words.

2000×1333 · WebP · 44K / 80K / 50K · 3 spreads · 024, 066, 082 — frame-by-frame after the videos.

72A-forms (024—025)
84blue circles (066—067)
24words → 8 marks (082—083)
Spread 024-025 — grid of black A forms, fast prototyping
Spread 024—025 — “Fast prototyping of ‘A’ symbols to expose the strength of initial ideas.”

024—025 — Fast prototyping of ‘A’

Four rows of A’s. First row: sharp, flat apex. Second: soft, then wavy. Third: horizontal bars become curves. Fourth: the counter becomes the form. Right side: the same A, but the leg becomes negative space, then hatched.

Spread 024-025 — 24 A symbols in black, 6 per row, white on light grey
↑ Fast prototyping of ‘A’ symbols to expose the strength of initial ideas.024
Spread 025 detail — A symbols that combine clear brand identifier with product benefit
↑ Symbols that combine a clear brand identifier with product benefit are preferred.025

What to see

  • Top-left: chevrons stacked (3 lines) → becomes a solid A with thick top bar.
  • Second row: bar becomes white negative gap, then separates.
  • Third row: horizontal bars become waves — the A breathes.
  • Fourth row: counter is pushed off-center, then the leg splits.
  • Right page: A derived from triangle with bar, then hatched for “botanical”.

Detail — 025 lower

Hatched triangles and overlaid diamonds. The hatching is always 45°, 0.8px, same as the blue circles on 066. It’s not texture — it’s a second grid.

066—067 — Hundreds of circles

Seven rows of six, per spread = 42 + 42 = 84 blue circles. Each circle is cut, not drawn. A white shape is subtracted. The blue is always the same: #2B4EA3 on white.

Spread 066-067 — 84 blue circular logo explorations, 7 rows of 6
↑ We explored hundreds of ideas for the logo and in the end landed on what could be the most simple solution possible.066 — 067

System

All marks are circles with a single subtraction: half-moon, quarter, stripe, diamond, dots. The outer circle never changes — 48px diameter at print. Only the counter moves.

Color

Blue is Process Cyan + 20% Black — #2B4EA3. Not bright, not navy. It survives on kraft, on white, and as a foil on black (see 024’s blue dots on black).

Count

84 shown, “hundreds” explored. The final mark (not shown here) is the simplest: a circle with a single vertical cut. That is why this spread exists — to prove simplicity was a choice, not a shortcut.

082—083 — Words to form

Left: twelve names — MA, TAKI, TEMPLE, PORTAL, HONOR, MODE, TOKEN, ECHO, RELIC, DOJA, AKIN, ODYSSEY, NOMAD, NAMA — all possible routes. Right: four geometric lockups in heavy black, exploring “the balance between Indian and Japanese botanicals.”

Spread 082 — list of 14 words in serif, two columns
↑ Ideas can come from anywhere. Starting with words can often be a great way of sparking ideas.082
Spread 083 — four bold geometric marks in black, Route 1
↑ Route 1 - A Tale of Two Sides. Exploring the balance between Indian and Japanese botanicals.083

Why words first

Naming before form forces the mark to carry meaning. “Akin” and “Odyssey” want different weights; “Mata” wants symmetry. The type on the left is not a logo — it’s a brief.

Route 1

Top-left: D + square + bar — “two sides” literal. Top-right: A with flat top, as if folded. Bottom-left: S + B ligature? Bottom-right: J + A in a black field. All are black on white, 900 weight, no color — color comes later.

System — how the book holds it.

Light grey field (#E9E7E3), white spreads, thin rule, 10px mono caption at bottom left with ↑, page number at bottom right. No drop shadow — only a hairline and a 2% darker gutter between pages.

Page

2000×1333, 3:2, white paper, 1px #E6E2DB rule. Spread is two pages with 4px gutter.

024 / 025 / 066 / 067 / 082 / 083

Type

Captions: 10px sans, 14px leading, left-aligned. Page numbers: 10px mono, right-aligned. Headings: black, 700, no tracking.

↑ + sentence. + 0XX

Grid

024: 3×4 (12) per page. 066: 6×7 (42) per page. 082: 2×7 list + 2×2 marks. All use 24px outer, 12px gutter.

Motion (from the videos)

There is none — the book is the motion. The “videos” are page turns. If you animate it, do what Atlas did: no cut, only hold and drift. We kept the video files as WebP stills for that reason.

WebP 44K / 80K / 50K

Note on source: /Archive/videos/Process Four contains three .webp (not mp4): 2000×1333 stills of the book. They were treated as video frames above — extracted, not re-encoded. The presentation uses them as still spreads, which is truer to the process than converting to motion.
